第八章

Bhagavan Bina Koi Apna Nahi

Hari Bhajan Bina...Spiritual Tips to climb the mountain of life
by Professor Dr. Suresh Govind

Chapter 8

Bhagavan Bina Koi Apna Nahi

… Continue from Part 1

The seeker now is understanding that Grace is vital for living, may be earnest in knowing how to secure Grace.

‘The grace of the Lord cannot be won by a little pretence of detachment or just a grain of discrimination. In order to get that Grace, there are two prescriptions; speak lovingly, so far as the world is concerned; and speak the truth. Strive to acquire Grace; Grace is the reward for spiritual discipline - the highest spiritual discipline is to follow the instructions of the Master.’

Hence spiritual discipline is what primarily Swami is asking us to undertake. Swami emphasised this further by stating,

‘God’s Grace is as the shower of rain, as the sunlight. You have to do some spiritual discipline to acquire it; the spiritual discipline of keeping a pot upright to receive the rain, the spiritual discipline of opening the door of your heart, so that the sun may illumine it….Pray for Grace; but do at least this little spiritual discipline. Grace will set everything right. Its main consequence is Self-realisation but there are other incidental benefits too, like a happy contented life here below and a cool courageous temper established in unruffled equanimity or peace.’

The honest seeker upon understanding the implication of Grace in one’s life may have a doubt, `Swami, but what if I am bound by Karma. I do want to practise all the spiritual discipline that has been instructed but could not the past deeds that I have done bind me with karmic chains and therefore prevent me from evolving?

‘You might say that the Karma of the previous birth has to be consumed in this birth and that no amount of grace can save man from that. Evidently, someone has taught you to believe so. But I assure you, you need not suffer from karma like that. When a severe pain torments you, the doctor gives you a morphine injection and you do not feel the pain, though it is there in the body. Grace is like the morphine, the pain is not felt, though you go through it. Grace takes away the malignity of the karma which you have to undergo: you know there are dated drugs which are declared ineffective after a certain date; well the effect of karma is rendered null, though the account of karma is rendered of, the Lord can save a man completely from the consequence, as was done by Me to the Bhakta whose paralytic stroke and heart attacks I took over some months ago in the 'Sri Guru Poornima week.’

The seeker as a result of momentous outbursts of inspiration may undertake some form of spiritual discipline but as a result of sloth or laziness may after some time give this up. Swami warns us,

‘Part-time devotion can only receive part-time grace.’

The line in the song though simple to comprehend forms the result of the experience. It is an indication that the individual consciousness when fully blossomed and ripened enough, a realisation will dawn that without His grace there will be a feeling of incompleteness in that individual. Swami says,

‘My grace is ever with you. It is not something that is given or taken. It is given always. But it is accepted only when the consciousness is aware of its significance. Win the grace of your own sub-conscious, so that it may accept the grace of God, which is ever available.’

Hence the spiritual discipline when undertaken tunes up our subconscious to become sensitive and be aware of God’s grace. This line of the song also reminds the seeker that one should have gratitude for the grace that is conferred.

Swami has said,

‘Devotion should be regarded as an expression of gratitude to all that one receives from Providence-the air that we breathe, the light and heat that we get from the sun, the water we drink and the food we consume. All the essential necessities of life are got by the Grace of God. The expression of gratitude through devotion is a primary obligation. All that is done by the way of bhajans, japa, meditation and prayer must be done in a spirit of gratitude.’

Without the teacher, the realisation that I, the individual is nothing in the world cannot instil the quality of humility. Humility checks our personality and keeps a vigilant eye on ego. To be constantly aware that the ego lurking in our personality may spring up is the technique to ensure that the individual retains a balance in life. Swami has said,

‘One’s personality blossoms only when one has humility along with knowledge.’

‘God’s Grace will be showered on those who have humility and discipline. Humility is essential for securing God’s grace. Revere elders. Be content with what you have. Develop goodwill towards all. Bear no ill towards anyone.’

Even if this simple line is devoid of the dressings of the philosophical contents and connotations it can stand on its own. Imagine a life without Bhagavan or for that matter any teacher who has shaped and influenced our thoughts. The usual shuttling from house to office and vice versa, engrossed in the daily routine, watching our children grow, striving and struggling to make ends meet and by the time they do meet it is time to retire and watch the world pass by through our window panes. Sadly we age, our bones bent, our skin wrinkle, our eyes blur and our legs stagger under the weight of one’s own body.

Quietly we wait for the final moments with weak recollections of the past occasionally darting onto our mind screen, but with nothing to reflect upon relating to the grandeur of a divine struggle and the contribution we have made to life and living in this world. The presence of a teacher, in our life instils in us, a sense of purpose.

There comes a feeling of adventure, a thrill to live turning every second into an unimaginable event which brings benefits not only to one but society as well. The experiences become enriched and the expanding circle, from loving just one to caring for society and the community becomes the evidence of the benefits of following the teacher’s guide-lines.

It is self-evident that when one is touched by the inner most cores of one’s being and experiences there is an unforgettable stream of steady joy. One’s mind will forever remember the source of that joy. It is the common experience that whenever and wherever a mother is, possibly working in the world outside, some portion of her mind naturally is devoted to wondering how and what her child is doing at school or at home. It is often the experience of the youth when in possession of an object, let us say a sports car, wherever he goes the mind goes on recalling the object, the picture of the sports car, and the joy it confers while riding in one constantly appear in his mind screen. Is it not true that a new song released by a pop group if it possesses a catchy tune is constantly hummed and sung by the youth? The tune goes on in his mind even when one is deeply engaged is doing other work. Hence if ordinary experiences leave an impression on the mind and the thoughts continue to generate memory and provide a picture of the object surely when the seeker has experienced the highest joy, the mind will never forget to remember the source of that joy who in this case is the teacher himself. The thoughts refuse to forget the name of the Lord and the mind continues to chant and repeat the name even while being engaged in other activities. The mind therefore in remembering the name will have to recall the form. The teacher will become a mother, father, teacher, guide, friend and everything to the seeker. The Supreme Lord becomes personified in the form of the teacher and the song concludes with the line …

Thus Speak Sri Sathya Sai

“The Name of the Lord is like the effulgence of the rising sun; it dispels the Darkness of Delusion. It is as luminous, as universal and as Divine, sweeter than the sweetness of sugar; tastier than the taste of cream or curd; sweeter and tastier than the ripened honey. The more you chant, the more is the taste. It is Divine Nectar verily. Chant that Divine Name Daily.”
