第八章

Bhagavan Bina Koi Apna Nahi

职是之故,圣恩的追求者必须以一个‘天赐的不满足’去充斥他自己 --‘目标尚未实现的痛苦’-- 这推他向前及转向内,寻求在他之内的完美而那就是神灵;

Bhagavan Bina Koi Apna Nahi

Which means that `Without God, I am nothing’…without the guide the mountain climber would have never been able to reach the peak. We all know that without plants, there will be no flowers. Without flowers, there will never be fruits. The waves need an ocean for it to dance and move on the surface. Only from the womb of a cause can an effect be born. The present is an effect of the past, and the future the effect of the present. Hence the line, that without the teacher who is the cause, the effect, I, the individual can never be, is the realisation born from a sense of gratitude.

In a practical class while the teacher exhaustively points out the techniques, and explains the rationale, he would also indicate briefly the expected result of such an experiment. This is done so that the student gains a certain direction as to how the experiment should proceed and to possibly allow the student to gauge and correct the steps if the results are too far away from the expected outcome. The intrinsic experiences gained through such spiritual practises indicated previously by this song is the reward of the student and never will a teacher describe the experience lest that should condition the mind of the seeker. However the teacher may indicate what happens to the nature of the personality in terms of attitude and behaviour if the seeker gains the promised experience. Here in the true tradition of teaching, this line in the song hints so beautifully that the seeker will realise that his inner bliss and joy felt is the effect of his teacher’s grace and blessing. Hence `Bhagavan’ in this line of the song can mean the physical form of Sai for Sai devotees but since the song is universal in its theme Bhagavan can also mean the awareness of the existence of God as a living dynamic presence in our lives, loving, guarding, guiding us in every step and His visible arms comforting us from the pain we have caused upon ourselves by past karmic backlash. The bee seeking the joy the nectar offers-man seeking the joy (grace) that confers. To secure Grace one must exert effort. Swami says,

‘How can you get God’s grace without undergoing trials? You know what severe processes gold goes through from the crucible onwards before an ornament is made. There can be no happiness without pain. Pleasure and pain go together in this world.’

Therefore the trials and tribulations one undergoes can bring God’s grace. Swami has said

‘My grace is proportional to your effort. Try to win grace by reforming your habits, reducing your desires and refining your nature. One step makes the next step easier; that is the excellence of spiritual journey. With each step, your confidence and strength increases and you get bigger and bigger instalments of grace.’

Therefore the equation appears to be G α E. If the proportional sign is to be removed than we must insert a constant. Swami has said,

‘Grace flows only when there is Faith.’

Hence the constant must be faith. Now the equation can be read as G = FE which means the greater the effort, the greater the radiance of God’s Grace provided that there is constant faith in the Lord.

The equation, may appear simple to some; however others might ask `To secure Grace from the Lord is difficult and perhaps only the chosen one can obtain it’ Swami so beautifully explains,

‘It might be thought that grace is difficult to secure. Such is not the case. Grace is the easiest thing to secure if the method is known and used. In the GEETA the method is given. As in driving a car, so confusing at first, but with practise it is so easy to do all the necessary tasks all at the same time and also carry on a conversation with ease. There is nothing that cannot be accomplished with practise.’

Like electrical energy, God’s Grace is all over, omnipresent and it is up to us to tap it.

A good teacher in order to drive home a point, especially if it is subtle, must paint a vivid imagery in the mind of the seeker. Swami brings another example to show how easily Grace can be won,

‘Winning the grace of the Lord is as easy as melting butter, that is why the heart of the Lord is compared to butter, they say. A little warmth is enough to melt it.’

If warmth is enough to melt the butter then surely this, to a seeker, it might just mean the warmth generated from a loving heart. Swami clarifies and indicates that it means much more,

‘You may say that progress is only possible only through my Grace, but though My heart is soft as butter, it melts only when there is some warmth in your prayer. Unless you make some disciplined effort, some spiritual discipline, Grace cannot ascend on you. The yearning, the agony of unfulfilled aim, that is the warmth that melts My heart. That is the anguish that wins Grace.’

Thus the seeker of Grace must be filled with a `Divine Discontent’- The agony of unfulfilled aim’-this pushes him forward and within seeking the perfection that is in him and that is Divine;

Swami says,

‘The grace of God is always flowing, like the electric current through the wire. Fix the bulb and the current will illumine your home, to the extent that the bulb can accommodate it. The spiritual discipline you practice will enable you to have a heart illumined with God’s Grace.’

The question a seeker might ask at this juncture is `Swami, Why is Grace important for Life?

Swami replies,

‘Without God’s Grace living itself will be impossible for mankind. Even the troubles you may experience are the gifts of the Divine. When you surrender all your actions, you will surely receive His Grace.’

Swami emphasis the point using another example,

‘The human body is a gift from God to each of us. It has to be used as a raft. On which you can cross this never calm Sea of Life that lies between birth and death, bondage and liberation. When the sea becomes slightly ruffled, ships turn into hollow reeds; at no time can you cross this sea by your own effort, alone. The Lord’s Grace is essential; so pray for that raft, and when you secure it, you can reach the shore in a trice.’

Swami even says that Grace is a catalyst for progress in the world,

‘If you have God’s grace you can progress fearlessly in the world. For this faith in oneself or self-confidence is the foundation.’
