第七章

Daya Dharma Bina Satkarma Nahi

Hari Bhajan Bina...Spiritual Tips to climb the mountain of life
by Professor Dr. Suresh Govind

Chapter 7

Daya Dharma Bina Satkarma Nahi

Which when translated means that unless Dharmic actions are undertaken with compassion, one will not reap the benefits of positive or true karma, the fruits of righteous actions.

It is inevitable that man should act. Action is the inevitable result of anything in the world touched by the life force. In fact Swami has said,

‘Karma or action means life force. Man is the instrument of this life force. The human body is made up of action. Hence the scriptures described man as `Karmaj’ i.e. born as a result of action. All actions performed by man with his limbs and organs are rendered possible by the Divine. Hence man must regard all actions as sacred.’

In another speech Swami said,

`Karma is the life sustaining force and is the cause of birth. The body is the instrument of this vital force. Every action done by man is karma. Man performs actions for the fruits thereof. He takes birth again to experience the results of his actions. Hence it is considered that man’s life in this world is bound by karma. Man cannot get away from action. Man’s condition in life is dependent by his actions, and his habits are then governed by the actions. Habits determine conduct, and conduct determines his future. Hence it is important how we act.’

The seeker in haste to commence his worldly duties might ask `What then is real true action? Swami says,

‘That which does not bind is the real work that which gives liberation is the real education.’

A teacher in a science class, before starting the practical class will state the principles and laws of science which forms the theory of the experiment. For example if it is a physics practical class and if the experiment is something to do with the gravitational principle then the law of gravity will be introduced and the teacher will have to explain what the meaning of acceleration due to gravity is. The students while performing the experiment will understand the rationale and the theory behind the procedures involved in the laboratory.

In the same way, in the bigger laboratory of LIFE the seeker of truth before he commences to undertake any actions, the teacher in Sai, must explain laws that govern our actions so that we while playing the various roles in the game of life we can come to understand the rationale and theory of living and life. And so Swami explains,

‘The law of Karma is based purely on action. Every action has an equal and opposite reaction, resound and reflection. It is only this which is the basis for Karmic Law. You reap what you sow either in the same birth or in a succeeding birth. When you die you carry with you not your worldly possessions, assets, name and fame, but only your deeds and misdeeds into the other world. When you are born into this world, you are born only with the garland of your deeds around your neck….The karma of action and reaction determines whether or not you will have rebirth. The law of Karma based on action and result, performance and consequence, determines when, where, how and why you have re-birth.’

The employee when being taken around for the first time in his job place will be initiated into the mechanics and processes of the daily routine of his job. He will be told of the pitfalls to watch out for and also the precautions that he should take while undertaking his job. A student seeking for a higher degree on his first day in the college will be orientated to the various facilities available and the process that would be involved to make the grade in the college. Even a prince before ascending to the throne will be briefed of his state functions and the royal obligations he must undertake so that the running of the country can be efficient and smooth. If all these routine daily obligations need briefing and explaining, surely the mechanics and processes of living and the principles of action need a very thorough and detail explanation since action is the basis of life. Swami elaborates,

‘When you talk of karma in the context of birth and re-birth, you must know that the term karma does not mean only action. When there is an action, there is always a reaction. So, Karma with respect to birth and rebirth refers to the chain of action and reaction……when I talk of `reaction’ I do not mean the result of action. What I mean is your reaction to the result; the response or the manner in which you receive the fruit of action. It is important for you to understand this because it is not action itself which causes rebirth, but the reaction…You feel happy and elated when the result is good; you feel unhappy and dejected when the result is bad. These emotional responses set off further desires and impulses which inflate and deflate the ego. This in turn leads to more action, and action results in reaction and thus a never ending chain of action-reaction.’

A seeker might ask `What happens to the desires and impulses that have accumulated? '

Swami says,

‘The desires and impulses remain with you even after death. They are so strong that you are born into this world again and again in order to fulfil them. As long as desires remain, rebirth is unavoidable.’

The seeker at this juncture satisfied by the explanation but is puzzled as to the question of how should one act. If action will create reaction and if reactions can leave impulses and desires, then surely, it is best not to act. If that decision is taken then there will be no more accumulation of desires and impulses which would mean no more birth?

The teacher replies,

`Nishkam karma is karma or action without desires for the fruit or reward. You will undertake every act only for its own sake and not for the sake of reward. The end result does not bother you. In this way, you become one who renounces the fruits of action.’

The seeker now will ask `Yes, but what if I adopt such a practise, undertake all action without desiring the fruits what will I become?’

Swami replies,

‘You will become a jeevan-mukta that is one who is liberated from the bondage of birth-death-rebirth while still living. There will be no more births for you. You will attain a state of equanimity and tranquillity. You will be in a constant state of peace which will not be shaken either by prosperity or by adversity. This is the perfect blissful state for which everyone should strive.’

A perfect scientific principle must have strength to stand by itself and must be complete without having any one to puncture the theory with any false argument. The seeker now completely satisfied with explanation given has one final doubt before he takes on his Dharmic roles and that is ‘If I have to act in the world surely the actions proceed because of desire …..For e.g. if I want to go the office then surely it is because of a desire. So how can I give up desires because if I do so then I will have no reason to act and if that is the case why should I have life itself ?’

Swami, perhaps anticipating that such a question will arise in the seeker clarifies,

‘The important thing is not give up the action, but the fruits of action. It is not the action itself which leads to the cycle of birth and death, but the desires that are attached to it. Hence work or service is to be done without the desire for rewards or returns. Work is worship; duty is God. Do karma for Me and through Me; then all acts will be turned into a prayer, leading to Grace. Tell yourself constantly - Sai is the doer, I am only the seer. This will help you to relinquish the desire for the fruits of actions. Dedicate all acts to Me. Then the question of rewards will not bother you.’

Hence in this line of the song Satkarma is introduced and from Swami’s speeches the mechanics and the principles underlying the Law of Karma has been detailed. The beautiful line complete with instructions tell us how one should live in this world.
